Vehicle Modifications

IMPORTANT: It is your responsibility to ensure that any modification work is carried out to the highest standards using professional fitters and that all work is to VOSA MOT Standards (for road going vehicles) and importantly that you inform your insurance company of any and all modifications.
The following modifications are typical of those carried out by ALRC Club Members to ‘standard vehicles’ competing in RTV and CCV class.  For access to the detailed and specific regulations please consult your ALRC ‘Green Book’ (available from the Club Secretary) or accessible from the ALRC website.

Fire Extinguisher:

Club rules say ‘you need’ a 1.75 litre AFFF fire extinguisher, accessible from driver’s seat.

Tow Rope:

Club rules say ‘you need’ a 25mm diameter tow rope about 15 ft in length with spliced loops in each end, capable of being attached to your standard recovery points front and rear, so you will likely need a couple of 20mm D-shackles to attach the tow rope. Most RTV’s and CCV motors have tow balls fitted front and rear. Make sure you get a top quality tow rope ‘without’ metal eyelets and without a hook. If anything does ever break, the last thing you want is a metal eyelet or hook flying about.


One of the biggest changes you could make to a standard vehicle is to get some better off-road tyres. The ALRC regulations say you can use any standard size, road legal tyre with a maximum diameter of 33”. Minimum tyre pressure is 22PSI for TYRO and RTV, 12PSI for CCV. You have a choice from 4 main tyre categories: All Terrain, Mud & Snow, Mud Terrain and Aggressive. There are hundreds of tyres of all types and tread patterns within each group with some overlap. If you stick to the well known brands you won’t go far wrong. There’s an obvious trade off here – the more ‘aggressive’ you go the worse your car will handle on tarmac, road noise will be greater and MPG will fall. So if you are deaf and don’t go out much then go fit that knobbly rubber to your Disco!


Not too much to be gained here. Factory fitted steel or alloy wheels are fine with appropriate wheel nuts. Discovery 1 steel wheels are very popular as they are light but very strong. Any Defender wheel is up to the job but 110 Heavy Duty and Military Wolf wheels won’t ever let you down. Reverse rim wheels are ‘not’ allowed, maximum distance from centre nave plate to wheel rim edge is 4”.


Heavy duty and winch bumpers are allowed but must be same size and shape as originals with suitable recovery rope attachment points both front and rear.

Diff Guards, Tank Guards, Steering Guards:

Not a requirement but a good idea for all those taking part in RTV’s and Green Laning. Essential for CCV motors hoping to get home in one piece!

Heavy Duty Shock Absorbers:

Here again, not a requirement but a good idea for all those taking part in RTV’s and Green Laning. Essential for CCV motors.

Up-rated Road Springs:

Most Land Rover 90’s, 110’s and Discovery 1’s are very competitive straight out of the box.  However there are always those who want to go that extra mile by fitting up-rated or longer springs, extended shock absorbers and dislocation cones. Remember (and a general maxim) the better you make your vehicle perform off road the worse it will drive on tarmac.

Roll Cage:

Not required (but not banned) for TYRO and RTV’s motors but a ‘must have’ for all CCV motors.

Seat Belts and Harnesses:

The rules say 3 point seat belts must be fitted and worn on all TYRO’s and RTV’s. CCV motors can use lap belts. We recommend full four point harness as a minimum for CCV’s. The ALRC Club Regulations ‘do’ permit many other modifications for RTV and CCV vehicles and even allow the building of special ‘one off’ vehicles.
